About Luxury Vinyl Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring has quickly become one of the most popular flooring options in residential and commercial settings. Why? Luxury vinyl flooring combines the natural looks of wood and stone with premium performance. So, no matter your design preferences or durability requirements, there's a perfect luxury vinyl floor for you.

Luxury vinyl, which is often referred to simply as LVT flooring, is super-stylish and ultra-durable because of its special construction. Unlike hardwood and stone, luxury vinyl features a synthetic construction, which means that it is almost entirely made from durable materials. With this construction, luxury vinyl will resist surface scratches and scuffs, and it also can handle spills and stains. At the same time, luxury vinyl planks and tiles are reinforced with additional support layers, so they will rarely, if ever, crack, chip, or break.

Expert Advice - LVT Flooring

Luxury vinyl flooring, or LVT flooring, has become more and more popular in residential and commercial settings. Join our very own Jim Aaron, VP of Merchandising for Carpet One Floor & Home, for some inside information about luxury vinyl.

How Is Luxury Vinyl Made?

Luxury vinyl flooring, unlike hardwood and tile, has a synthentic construction. In fact, vinyl planks and vinyl tiles are made from different layers that are fused together. The top layer is called the wear layer, and it resists virtually all scratches, scuffs, and other surface blemishes. The wear layer also can handle moisture and dirt, so any spills can be wiped from the surface without long-term consequences. Underneath the wear layer is the design layer, which includes a high-definition wood or stone visual. Luxury vinyl therefore looks exactly like real wood or stone.

Most luxury vinyl floors feature additional support layers that are often referred to as core and base layers. These support layers provide extra strength and stability to the planks and tiles, so they are unlikely to expand, contract, chip, and crack, regardless of environmental factors.

Because of its special construction, luxury vinyl flooring combines the natural looks of real wood and stone with premium performance. It is more wear resistant and moisture resistant than wood and tile, and it remains more comfortable underfoot and easier to maintain.

Types of Luxury Vinyl Flooring

There are a few different types of luxury vinyl flooring options, including vinyl tile flooring and vinyl plank flooring. Vinyl tile is a alternative to ceramic and porcelain tile, while vinyl plank is an alternative to hardwood and laminate. Sheet vinyl flooring is more traditional option that is noted for its installation versatility, but it is not as popular as vinyl tile and vinyl plank.

Is Luxury Vinyl Flooring Waterproof?

We mentioned before that luxury vinyl flooring can resist moisture, but is it waterproof? For the most part, all luxury vinyl floors are considered moisture resistant, but there are some luxury vinyl options that are considered waterproof. WPC (wood-plastic composite) flooring, for example, is a type of luxury vinyl that is waterproof. WPC flooring has a strong waterproof core that prevents the planks and tiles from ever expanding or contracting when exposed to moisture. This core also stops moisture from ever reaching the subfloor, where is can promote the growth of mold and mildew.

Another waterproof luxury vinyl flooring option is rigid core flooring. Rigid core flooring, which is a relatively new type of luxury vinyl flooring, is super-durable, and it is considered totally waterproof because of its thick and uniform construction.

Where Can Luxury Vinyl Be Installed?

Although hardwood and stone offer natural style and luxury, they aren’t suitable for every residential setting. Hardwood, for example, isn’t the best option for areas with moisture or heavy foot traffic. Luxury vinyl, however, is suitable for pretty much any area in the home. It can withstand the foot traffic you typically see in living rooms, it is comfortable enough for bedrooms, and it can handle the moisture you’d expect in kitchens. In high-traffic or high-moisture areas like bathrooms, however, we do recommend choosing a waterproof luxury vinyl floor. Learn more about luxury vinyl flooring installation.

There are also commercial luxury vinyl floors that can handle heavy foot traffic. These floors, which are exceptionally strong and usually extra thick, are even suitable for rolling traffic.
